The following recent auction sales of M.C. Escher’s major works provide a glimpse into his market, but they fail to reflect the true value of his art. The finest examples of Escher’s work, particularly those in pristine condition, are predominantly traded through private treaty sales. At Walker Fine Art, we exclusively handle works in “top pop” condition—meaning pieces that are in the best known state of preservation. This distinction is critical, as much of Escher’s oeuvre has suffered from poor framing practices or neglect by original owners. Consequently, even works discovered in subpar condition are exceptionally rare, and we seize any opportunity to acquire them for our collection.
